We are learning all about Safety at school this week. To help us to kick off this topic, we had a trip to the fire station on Birley Moor Road. We have been learning about firefighters as part of our Great Fire of London topic as well.
We took the tram from school and it was so exciting. We were thinking about all of the things that we might see at the fire station or the questions we could ask.
When we arrived, we met Nic who had been a fire-fighter for 10 years. She asked us if we knew what a fire-fighter did. We found out that a fire-fighter didn’t just put out fires.
Did you know that firefighters:
- Put fires out
- Rescue animals if they are stuck
- Help if people have been involved in road accidents
- Put smoke alarms into people’s homes
- Rescue people if they are drowning or are stuck in water
- Help out in emergencies
Nic then showed us some of the equipment that she uses and needs to wear if she gets called out to an emergency.
After that, Nic and her team took us on a tour around the fire station. We saw lots of fire engines and all of the tools that fire-fighters might need to use. Jim showed us where the emergency call comes through. Some of the tools that the fire-fighters have to use are really heavy – you need to be strong if you want to be a fire-fighter.
Just before it was time to go back to school, we got a special treat. We were allowed to use the fire hose and squirt water, imagining that we were real-life fire-fighters putting out a fire.
We had the best fun!
Thank you to everyone at Birley Moor Fire Station for making your visit amazing! Thank you to all of our parents and helpers who came with us on the trip too! Without your help, we wouldn’t have been able to go.
