Mathematician of the Week

Welcome back to our first Mathematician of the Week for the new term.

You have been a superstar this week when we have been looking at column subtraction. You have been able to apply your knowledge of column addition to help you to when you were setting out your work independently and could explain the place value of each two-digit number. Fantastic! ๐Ÿ™‚

Mathematician of the Week

Congratulations to our Mathematician of the Week.

Aut 1 - Week 5.png

As you can see from his beautiful presentation, he has been able to set out his work perfectly when we have been learning about column addition this week, based on our previous work when we used the Dienes to partition 2-digit numbers into tens and ones. Fantastic work! ๐Ÿ™‚

Maths, maths, maths…

We have really been trying extra hard with our maths since we came back to school in September.

We have been using concrete objects to help us to be able to find our answers like Numicon and Dienes.

First we started to look at how to partition 2-digit numbers into tens and ones and answering word problems to look at the symbols greater than (>) and less than (<).

We had a go at matching numbers to Dienes to the number words.

Click here to build a two-digit number using Dienes (tens and ones)

Next we started to show our working out in our maths books. We added a two-digit number to a one-digit number and then we added 10.

After that, we added a two-digit number to a two-digit number, showing our working out with the Dienes.

Today we started to look at how to set out column method. It was tricky at first but we soon got the hang of it.

Look at how neat it is!

We are very proud of our work.

Miss Varley is very proud of our work as well! ย ๐Ÿ™‚

What you could do at home to support your child:

  • Complete the weekly homework that is linked to what your child has been doing at home.
  • Ask your child to say how many tens and ones a two-digit number has.
  • Practise adding two-digit numbers to one and two-digit numbers.
  • Speak to Miss Varley if you would like more help in being able to support your child.
